So this post is about My appearance. It’s not the reason behind it, it’s just about it.
One day I will share the reason behind the way I look, I promise you that. But till then, let’s dance around the subject, shall we?
Growing up in my mixed Greater London secondary school, my appearance didn’t quite stick out that time. A lot of girls had big natural hair and we were young so make up wasn’t something everyone wore either. Life was simple. Fast forward to university and it’s like every day I have to face interrogation about “when are you going to make your hair?” “Why isn’t your hair relaxed?” “Won’t you make up for your dinner?”
It got pretty tiring reaaaallly quickly. I used to wonder why so many other people were bothered about my appearance so much. Like hello it’s my appearance not yours guys. I never quite got a chance to understand why either, I guess it’s one of the mysteries of life in Nigeria.
Another annoying thing I go though is being told “you’re pretty for a deeper life girl”. This is so rude because that person is basically dissing the majority of girls that attend my church around the world. In fact, it’s a diss to every non make up wearing girl and it’s funny because these are probably the same guys that tell girls they like “natural girls”. When girls pester about my looks I can say it’s out of curiosity as to how I would look with make up, but guys – I don’t have an excuse for them. One time a guy even asked if it was because I couldn’t afford make up. Sigh.
The long and short of my mini rant is that people should give us a break. Yes, we stick out in a crowd but we could really do without the unwarranted verbal affirmation. So when next you see a Deeper Life/Natural girl give her a compliment rather than a query or rude look; it would be a nice change.
