The above statement is such a disgusting thing to say, I cannot fully express how irritated I am by this sentence, the fact that people still say it and what’s worse – that people still believe it.
No one, I repeat, NO ONE should ever make you feel lucky to have their interest. Like it’s never acceptable. I don’t care how rich or powerful they may be, you’ve got something they can’t buy – their interest! So hold yourself in high esteem and never look down on yourself enough to actually think you’re lucky to be interesting to someone. Like helloooo? Yes I stretched out that word so it rings for longer in the pinnae of your ears. Have you seen yourself? You’re a whole human being capable of attracting others to yourself with ease! Why let one person’s attraction be the be-all and end-all for you?
Let me divulge this about myself, one time in my first year at uni in Nigeria I found myself broke. It was the first time since I had arrived; I had miscalculated when I was due for my next pocket money and well, I was hungry lol. Real life hunger. Rationing sugar to soak with my gari kind of hunger. Hot meals were out of the question type of hunger – You get the picture by now?
So now that the scene is set – imagine a guy offering to buy you dinner after you haven’t had a hot meal in a week – your eyes would water – well mine did anyways haha. So this guy starts getting me food regularly during that period and truly I appreciated the gesture, as you can imagine what I was going through in my temporary predicament – but I knew it was exactly that – temporary and so I never allowed myself to feel indebted to him, especially as he kept declining when I said I’d pay him back as soon as I could.
One day he comes with the “I wanna date you” line and I politely decline and of course, he dropped the “after all I’ve done for you” line. Typical. Totally typical. He’s lucky I’m a well mannered girl because I had been keeping account of how much he had spent and by the time he popped the question I had gotten my pocket money so if I wanted to I could have simply thrown the money in his face Nollywood style lol. Instead, I thanked him again and explained why I wasn’t interested in a relationship as patiently and gently as I could.
Anyways bottom line is, you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel less of a human or “lucky” to have their interest. NO ONE! The only person who’s interest you should be ultimately concerned with is God’s – His love is unconditional and everlasting so no worries there thankfully 🙂
