When God leads a man/woman to a lady/man, He does it INTELLIGENTLY and PURPOSEFULLY. He puts everything necessary into consideration. Let this truth be indelibly inscribed on your mind.
WHEN GOD LEADS A BELIEVER TO A LIFE
PARTNER, HE WILL NEVER LEAD HIM OR HER TO AN UNBELIEVER.
God leads a believer to another believer (people of like precious faith and love for the LORD).
God will lead one believer to another believer with similar spiritual commitment. When God leads you, it would be to someone with whom you can build a big, profound and meaningful life.
One fact must be firmly established – God never allows a believer (born again Christian) to marry an unbeliever. God has no interest in such union. Pastors who bring such couple together in “holy” matrimony are disobedient to the Bible teaching on marriage.
God’s Word in Deuteronomy 7:3-4 admonishes,
“Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.”
Deuteronomy 7:3-4 KJV
Joshua 23:12-13 holds a similar admonition.
“Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.”
Joshua 23:12-13 KJV
Again, 2 Corinthians 6:14 clearly COMMANDS,
“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
2 Corinthians 6:14 KJV
This is so straight forward. Don’t do it. Do not allow anything to lead you into it. I will give you some reasons why a believer should not have marriage plans or arrangements, agreement or covenant with an unbeliever.
One, Believers walk by faith and unbelievers walk by sight. There’s absolutely no way a believer can walk with an unbeliever because while the person that walks by sight easily gives up, the one that walks by faith affirms he will get anywhere Christ tells him to go. And like the prophet Amos asked in Amos 3:3, “can two walk away together, except they be agreed?”
Two, believers owe their complete allegiance to God, His Word and His flock while unbelievers owe their own allegiance to the world, their families, and to vain traditions of men, if these two, with their world of differences, come together in marriage there will be divided loyalty in the home. While the believing partner is loyal to God, the unbelieving partner is loyal to the world. While the believing partner is interested and delighted in the family of God, the unbelieving partner is interested in the fashions and fads of the world. While the Word of God is the guide of the believing partner, the tradition of the world is the guide of the unbelieving partner. Certainly, there will be a sharp contrast in everything. Their home will be in chaos, that is why God said in Joshua 23:13 “…..they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes”
Three, there will be conflict in decision making. When the word of God provides the believing partner’s solution, the unbelieving partner’s carnal mind gives him his/her own solution. In as much as they get solutions from two different sources, they can never reach a compromise when it comes to decision making.
Four, the believing and unbelieving partners have different goals, different pursuits and aspirations in life. So, they will be literally tearing the family apart if they come together in marriage.
Five, a believer and an unbeliever are under the influence of different spirits. While the unbeliever walks under the influence of the spirit of the power of the air, the believer is fully possessed and control by the Holy Spirit. When a believer marries an unbeliever therefore, two different spirits (diametrically opposed in nature and works) begin to struggle.
Six, because of who the unbeliever is by nature. The unbeliever has a perpetual stony heart but the believer has a heart of flesh. When a person who has a soft, gentle and tender heart lives with a person who has a stony heart, you know what can result from that – life becomes very difficult for the one with a tender heart.
Moreover, an examination of the names, titles, and symbols used for believer and unbelievers in the Bible shows why they must not come together in marriage. In Matthew 25:32 Believers are referred to as sheep, while unbelievers are referred to as goats. Have you ever seen a sheep in the company of goats and vice-versa? It is not possible for a sheep and a goat to come together in marriage. Also, in Jeremiah 13:23 unbelievers are called leopards, and John 21:15 Believers are called lambs.
You can imagine what will happen if a harmless and defenceless lam is housed in the same cage with a wild and terrible leopard. The leopard is by nature a devourer while the lamb is gentle. They cannot live together.
Besides, JESUS calls unbelievers poisonous and harmful vipers while He calls the Believers harmless and gentle doves (Matthew 10:16). JESUS again warned His followers that unbelievers are wolves in a sheep clothing. They are deceptive and destructive.
Now, the fact that you have prayed to know God’s will in marriage for your life and have been led to a believer of like precious faith does not mean that you have reached the end of the road. There will be hurdles to scale through. And your action or reaction at this stage will actually lend credence to, or otherwise puncture your professed God’s leading.
“The road should be accident free when I am in the will of God” you say? I will say yes and no to that. No because accidents and problems are bound to arise. And Yes because accidents and problems that confront you when you are in the will of God are only ascension stools in your flight of faith.
Certain problems that could arise at this stage include, getting the consent of your parents. The person you have a leading to May have serious challenges with his or her health, or be unemployed. In times like this, if you are surrounded by pessimistic friends, they may begin to inject fear and doubt into your heart. And this can make you doubt God’s leading.
When God called Abraham it was His will for him to come out of the land of his nativity into a land he did not know. On coming out in obedience to God’s will, the first experience he had was a problem of a great famine. What was that meant to do? Of course to challenge his faith. Problems do not necessarily come because you are on the wrong path or track or because you are weak, they come mainly to develop and strengthen your faith.
The blessings of God awaits the obedient.
“And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Genesis 26:2-5 KJV.
