Hey guys! It’s been another long while since a new natural hair post graced this blog so here’s something extra special!
Some of you may be familiar with “African Thread” as seen on many conservatively dressed women in Nigeria, but for those of you who don’t know what it is; it is a type of material used to mend shoes, sow heavy duty wear etc. it’s a durable thread and women started using it to thread their hair centuries ago – long before the commencement of weaves – and it showed how well it helps to grow the hair, hence its continued use till this day.
This is how women normally wear “African Thread”
I have decided to remix the use of African thread – I made braids with it! I used one roll of the thread for each braid, it took me about 120 pieces as my hair is rather full – each roll is between N20-N30 depending on the area and availability.
I chose to make it my hair length + an inch for the bottom part where the braids were sealed by making neat knots as it doesn’t work well with a flame seal.
African thread is very light, no where near as heavy as the other more popular braiding materials – which is good as it won’t pull at my edges that I have taken such good care of all this while haha.
Best part of this hairstyle is it protectiveness; I won’t have to manipulate my hair for a while which is refreshing for me and most importantly – I’m gonna get some more growth!
